Scaturro: McCarthy Scandal Shows Loyalty to Special Interests Not the People
September 07, 2010
Frank Scaturro for Congress
Franklin Square, NY – The Daily News today reported Representative Carolyn McCarthy took campaign donations from lobbyists and in turn “steered $4.3 million to two clients” of the contributing lobbying firm. The firm employed Paul and Mark Magliocchetti, who have been indicted for illegal campaign contributions.

“The people of Nassau County have long wondered why their representative was rarely seen around the district and has been notoriously unresponsive to their concerns”, said Frank Scaturro, “Now their worst fears have been confirmed. Rep. McCarthy is clearly more loyal to special interest money than her own constituents”.

Like McCarthy, Scaturro’s opponent in next week’s Republican primary is a seven term career politician who is beholden to special interests, not the people. He did not begin a campaign until spurred forth by political bosses.

Mr. Scaturro has a record of fighting corruption and abuse. He successfully fought a corrupt government bureaucracy to have Grant’s Tomb restored, and is now running to unseat Mrs. McCarthy despite attempts by party bosses to undermine the process.

Scaturro takes on McCarthy in NY-4

Frank Scaturro, a young, energetic, across-the-board conservative with the pragmmatic, problem solving style of Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell, is challenging McCarthy in the 4th Congressional District race in 2010. McCarthy’s last rating from the American Conservative Union was an 8. Her lifetime rating is 20. The NRA, not surprisingly, gives her an “F.” Her last rating from the left wing Americans for Democratic Action was a 20. McCarthy was first elected as a moderate former Republican, but has drifted steadily left in 13 years in Congress. In the current Congress she has voted the Democratic Party line more than 98 percent of the time, according to the Washington Post. She voted “no” on the Stupak Amendment to the House version of the Obama-Pelosi healthcare bill, and then voted yes on the final bill. This district is simply not that liberal, and McCarthy could be far more vulnerable than past election results suggest.

From 1953 through 1996, New York’s Fourth Congressional District, in suburban Nassau County on Long Island, was a Republican stronghold. However, in 1992 Bill Clinton carried the district in the Presidential race in a Democratic breakthrough. In 1994 Dan Frisa, a conservative Republican, defeated one-term moderate Republican David Levy in a primary challenge, but then held the seat with just 50.2% of the vote in the general election, despite the strong Republican tide that year. Frisa was in turn defeated in 1996 by Democrat Carolyn McCarthy, a former Republicans and an ardent gun control activist who rose to public prominance after the death of her husband in the 1993 Long Island Railroad shooting. McCarthy held off a tough challenge in 1998 and since then has won without great difficulty. She won with 65 percent of the vote in 2006 and 62 percent in the strong Democratic year of 2008. The district voted for Obama, 58-41 in 2008.

This might not look like fertile ground for a Republican takeover in 2010, but times may be a-changing. Republican Ed Mangano appears to have narrowly defeated a two-term incumbent Democrat in the County Executive race this month, with the recount expected to conclude on Monday. Had a spoiler Conservative Party candidate not claimed over 9000 votes, the race would not even be close. Republicans also won a majority on the County Legislature for the first time in a decade, and unseated the Democrat County Controller.

        Against this background,
Frank Scaturro, a young, energetic, across-the-board conservative with the pragmmatic, problem solving style of Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell, is challenging McCarthy in the 4th Congressional District race in 2010. McCarthy’s last rating from the American Conservative Union was an 8. Her lifetime rating is 20. She voted “no” on the Stupak Amendment to the House version of the Obama-Pelosi healthcare bill, and then voted yes on the final bill. This district is simply not that liberal, and McCarthy could be far more vulnerable than past election results suggest.

Scaturro was formerly Republican counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee, a position in which he helped shepherd through the supreme court nominations of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Hofstra law school, teaching Constitutional law. Human Events’ John Gizzi
recently profiled the race. You can donate or get involved here.

Scaturro can put this seat back in the red column, especially if, as now appears likely, 2010 is a strong Republican year. This is the type of race Republicans need to get involved in early, stretching the Democrats defense to the breaking point. Remember, early fundraising dollars matter most.

          Voting Machines
This year brings a big change with new electronic voting machines. Not to worry! The County Board of Elections is hosting a number of information sessions featuring the new machines. The key thing to remember is to properly fill out the paper portion of the ballot. As long as you completely fill in the bubble next to the candidate of your choice, and only one bubble for each category, processing the ballot through the machine will be easy. If the machine does alert you to a mistake, please take the time to cancel the vote and start over again so you get it right.

To find out when and where the machines will be on display near you, click HERE.

          Absentee Ballots

Frank Scaturro: Israel Needs Support from Washington
              August 31, 2010
              Frank Scaturro for Congress
Israel is our staunchest ally in one of the most sensitive and dangerous regions in the world, a thriving democracy surrounded by oppressive and hostile regimes.  Against this backdrop, the current administration took an unfortunate turn. Too often, President Obama has slighted Israel and given hope instead to the enemies of Israel and the United States.

President Obama began his tenure by reaching out to the two main state sponsors of terrorism in the Middle East which threaten Israel’s survival, Iran and Syria. The administration from day one established diplomatic ties with Syria, a backer of the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah.  The president then sought to engage Iran, a brutal dictatorship whose leadership denies the Holocaust, rejects the very existence of Israel, and seeks destruction of the Jewish state.

In a speech to the United Nations, President Obama referred to the Israeli “occupation,” and in Mr. Obama’s Cairo speech, he compared the plight of the Palestinians to that of the Jews during the Holocaust.  He has supported the goal of a divided Jerusalem, and in so doing turned his back on the Israelis’ claim to their city as the undivided capital of the Jewish state—a claim supported by U.S. law, the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995.

The east Jerusalem housing construction project announced in December was met by condemnation from the administration. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spent 45 minutes on the phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu berating him for settlement construction and dictating the administration’s terms for peace.  Most troubling was Clinton’s demand that Netanyahu make a “substantial confidence-building gesture to the Palestinians,” when every land concession ever given to the Palestinians by Israel has only been met with more terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians.

During a March visit to the White House, the president abruptly walked out of talks with Netanyahu, handed the prime minister a list of 13 demands, and left him to sit alone for over an hour. The episode was humiliating to our guest and his country.

Throughout all this, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy has failed to defend Israel, apparently because that would require her to criticize the Obama administration. She said nothing about Obama and Clinton’s treatment of Netanyahu. She said nothing about the administration’s absurd charge that Israeli settlement construction, in Jewish neighborhoods, is to blame for stalled peace negotiations. It is as if decades of Palestinian violence and refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist have no effect on peace negotiations.

Perhaps even more troubling was the reaction of Rep. McCarthy to the flotilla attempting to break Israel’s Gaza blockade.  Her initial statement demonstrated a lack of understanding of the situation. She expressed sympathy for the provocateurs without acknowledging their blatant disregard of the procedures required for humanitarian aid vessels. The evidence from the beginning made it clear that Israel was simply enforcing a fully legal blockade of Gaza.  Israeli soldiers would not have been forced to draw their weapons had they not been sabotaged.

Her reaction stood out like a sore thorn amongst her peers given the bipartisan show of support for Israel shown by many members of Congress. In addition to prominent Republicans like Eric Cantor, Peter King, and Michele Bachmann, New York House Democrats Anthony Weiner, Gary Ackerman, and Jerrold Nadler spoke out in immediate defense of Israel in response to the onslaught of condemnation it received from the international community.  During the week that followed the flotilla episode, Rep. McCarthy failed to speak out on this pertinent issue.    Only when outcries from her constituents  reached a fever pitch did her office finally issue another statement.

The history of the Middle East makes it clear that the Arab-Israeli conflict is not over a small stretch of land, but over Arab intolerance of a Jewish and Zionist entity in their midst.  Arab media and Muslim clerics in the region repeatedly call for Israel's destruction on a daily basis—both in their television and news media and in their educational curriculum.

Israel cannot be left to fend for itself simply because the Democratic leadership in Congress is unwilling to criticize a president of their party.  If elected to Congress, I would insist that the Palestinians understand that the security of Israel and recognition of the legitimacy of the Jewish state are preconditions to the peace process. I will not defer to a president of either party when I feel he or she is mistaken on such a critical matter.

The people of Nassau County deserve representation that is vigilant in the face of extremism and terrorism, and will stand by their true friend Israel. The president’s desire to improve our relationship with the Muslim world should not lead us down the path of compromising our principles or abandoning our allies. Unfortunately, the administration’s handling of the state of Israel has given rise to palpable fear that our greatest ally in the Middle East is being subverted at a time of unprecedented vulnerability. Israel has made tremendous concessions in an attempt to secure peace, and should not be expected to make more before its neighbors recognize its right to exist.

Israel is not and should not be a partisan issue.  If our representatives in Washington find themselves unable or unwilling to defend Israel’s right to exist and take the actions necessary to protect its citizens, they have ceased to represent and should make way for new leadership.

                    Scaturro For Congress

                    To the Editor:

I am writing to share my enthusiasm for a candidate for Congress who will truly represent the needs of our district in Washington. His name is Frank Scaturro.

Frank is a first-generation Italian-American who has spent nearly all of his 38 years in New Hyde Park. He is an attorney, author, and preservationist who will go to Congress to cut taxes, lower spending, and create jobs. He is a Conservative Republican candidate who previously served as Counsel to the Constitution for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee and was a key aide on the nominations of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Frank most recently served as a visiting law professor at Hofstra University School of Law, where he taught courses on the legislative process and the Constitution.

My husband, Jim and I were both born and raised in Garden City. After leaving to pursue our educations and careers, we returned to Long Island seven years ago to raise our children. While there are so many reasons to love life here, we feel dismayed that our current representative in Congress does not reflect our voice or address our concerns. Taxes continue to rise; small businesses on Long Island seem to be disappearing; and the frightening trend of government takeovers in the private sector and health care have left us saying, “Enough!”

It is time for a change, and Frank Scaturro has the intelligence, integrity and vision that will give us our voice back.

As you may know, my dad, Jack Wydler, was the representative for our district for 18 years. People still stop me to say how special that time was and how much they appreciated having a Congressman who was there for them to represent their needs. I have followed Frank’s campaign for the last year and I see many of the same qualities in him that my father possessed. I have every confidence that Frank will work hard to improve the lives of those of us who live in the 4th district.

Please take some time to familiarize yourself with Frank and his campaign by visiting his website at www.frankscaturro.com.

Don’t forget - the Republican primary is on Tuesday, September 14th. Please mark your calendars and vote! And when you do, I urge you to consider voting Frank Scaturro for Congress.

Thank you very much for your time.

                    Vote For Scaturro

                    To The Editor:

Tell me that you like things the way they are in Our Country today and I will go away and never bother you again.

For Americans who live in the Fourth C.D., citizens, taxpayers, and voters, and for those people who care and who cannot stomach any more, it is about to be our turn to get it right. It is a process that will begin on September 14, 2010 with the Republican Primary.

Let me put it plainly. My intent is to get rid of McCarthy in 2010 and Obama in 2012. I will not explain my reasons. I assume you understand the problems we face and you will vote September 14 to begin the process to return the opportunity for Decency, Honor, Pride and Prosperity to the American people.

For a start, please vote for Frank Scaturro in the Republican Primary September 14. I believe Frank is the right young man to replace McCarthy in our House of Representatives.

                      Frank Scaturro for Congress
Kevin McCarthy (no relation to Carolyn) a Republican Representative from California in charge of recruiting new candidates told CNN that Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4) is now seen as a vulnerable seat.

"McCarthy said over 80 House seats are now in play, noting that is more than twice the number Republicans need to take the majority. Ticking through many of the competitive races across the country, McCarthy predicted even more seats currently leaning Democratic –like Rep David Wu's in Oregon and Rep Carolyn McCarthy's in New York - will begin shifting toward the Republican column."

Frank Scaturro Accepts Debate with Fran Becker
                        August 23, 2010
                        Frank Scaturro for Congress
League of Women Voters Debate will take place on August 31st at the Hewlett Woodmere Library beginning at 8:15 P.M.

Franklin Square, NY – Frank Scaturro has eagerly accepted the invitation to participate in a debate held under the auspices of the League of Women Voters.

The Scaturro campaign has strived to focus on solutions to the great challenges our nation faces today. It is high time that elections were about which candidate will best represent the people of Nassau County, and not about political bosses or special interests.

Our country faces record debt, rising tax rates, and a healthcare takeover that Carolyn McCarthy has rubber-stamped. We must take back her seat for the people or risk leaving Democrats in control of the House, and our country on its current declining path.

“I look forward to this opportunity to discuss the best approach to reversing the far-left agenda that has been thrust on the American people under the House’s Democratic leadership,” said Frank Scaturro.

“The more open the election process, the better.  The American people are engaged as never before and deserve the opportunity to see and hear their candidates.  That belief has guided my campaign.  It is why I am available to constituents every Friday at our headquarters, and why I have traveled all over the district to meet my neighbors.”

“I look forward to Mr. Becker’s confirmation of his participation in this debate, and thank the League of Women Voters for their commitment to Democracy,” concluded Scaturro.

Scaturro: Ground Zero Mosque raises many questions
                            August 22, 2010

Rep. McCarthy and fellow New York Democrats duck for sidelines

The proposed plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero has triggered a national debate that has brought in everyone from Sarah Palin to President Obama. Unfortunately, the intense spotlight has not cleared up the many questions about the mosque builders, the funding of the project, or the intentions behind it. Neither the President nor a good number of New York Democrats, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, have shown an interest in answering those questions.

Why that location? Are those who are trying to build the mosque near Ground Zero doing it to encourage interfaith dialogue? The words of the president of the Cordoba Initiative that purchased the site, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, suggest otherwise. If they were trying to build a bridge, why resist transparency instead of disclosing the sources of their funding? Questions have even been raised about the initial naming of the mosque as “Cordoba House” before it was retracted in the face of protest (although the Cordoba Initiative still uses that name to refer to the project).

Imam Rauf has spoken out in favor of imposing Sharia law in contexts that apparently include the U.S. and once asserted that “the United States’” policies were an accessory to the crime that happened” on 9/11. That is his right, as is the construction of a place of worship. The location of such construction, however, raises serious questions.

Rep. McCarthy unfortunately has shown no interest in asking any questions. Instead, she stated (as usual, speaking through a spokesperson): “The debate around the proposed Cordoba House has been an emotional one, and now that the measure has been approved to move forward, I hope we can work together to rebuild the area around Ground Zero in a manner that will honor our fallen heroes.”

In reality, the matter is not finished. The decision has been appealed, and additionally, Con Edison must sell off its interest in the property or consent before construction starts. The failure to address the questions raised by the mosque demonstrates the deference we have grown to expect from our representative to Speaker Pelosi and President Obama. Once again, her constituents deserve better.

Taken in context, the mosque would be viewed by our enemies as a monument to conquest at the very site of the most murderous attack ever committed on American soil. It would serve throughout the world as a strategic victory for Al Qaeda and other radical Islamic interests with which we are at war. Whether it is completely accurate or not, they would claim that the building of a mosque in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero, where they destroyed the World Trade Center, shows that they are succeeding and that more attacks will further their goals. Moreover, this would be an affront to those who lost family members at Ground Zero, and who rightfully consider the area a mass gravesite.

The bottom line is that location matters when government considers proposed construction. It is a matter of common sense. Government routinely makes zoning and land use decisions according to the character of the surrounding area. A municipality may determine that buildings cannot exceed a certain height after making a judgment about the surrounding area or that a casino could not be built near a school (or anywhere for that matter). In recent years, there have been challenges to proposals to construct a theme park or a shopping center on or near Civil War battlefields, not because opponents wanted government to ban the underlying projects entirely, but simply because they were not appropriate on what our nation rightfully considers hallowed ground. Ground Zero bears a similar sanctity, and our elected officials should have better protected it when faced with the mosque proposal.

In spite of all the attention and debate, there is still an opportunity for the Cordoba Initiative to do the right thing and move the Community Center to another location out of respect for the 9/11 victims and the nearly 70% of Americans who oppose its construction. I urge them to listen.

Frank Scaturro delivered more than twice the required Republican signatures to the Nassau County Board of Elections Today.

Mineola, NY—The year of the American people continues. The Scaturro campaign has shattered its goals for petition signatures on both the Republican and Conservative lines by submitting 3,305 Republican, and 363 Conservative signatures. This ensures that Frank Scaturro will appear on both party lines for the September 14th primary.

The people of the 4th district want to send an honest new face to Congress to represent their true interests, not those of Nancy Pelosi. Their hard work and enthusiasm has ensured they will have that choice on September 14th and November 2nd.

“I’ve had enough of the dysfunction in Washington and the inability of business-as-usual politicians to defend the people from radical legislation” said Scaturro “The incredible volunteer support we have received during our petition drive shows that the people are ready to take our country back”.

Scaturro concluded, “A big thank you to our supporters from myself and the campaign staff. We will win this election and return real, accountable, representation to the 4th district!”

The free market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today applauded New York U.S. House candidate Frank Scaturro (4th District) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax Pledge.”  Scaturro joins more than 600 bipartisan lawmakers and candidates on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“The one thing elected officials should agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP Vice President for Policy Phil Kerpen.  “We encourage all of New York’s elected officials and candidates for office to sign the pledge.”

New York signers include U.S. Senate candidates Karen Bisso and Tim Chichester; U.S. House candidates Fran Becker, Mike Grimm, Chris Gibson, George Phillips, Matt Doheny, Tom Reed, Doug Hoffman, Michael Giuliano, Anne Marie Buerkle, and Leonard Roberto; gubernatorial candidate Warren Redlich; State Senator Owen Johnson; and State Senate candidates Pat Gallivan, Greg Ball and David DiPietro.

Cap-and-trade took its first step toward enactment last year when the U.S. House narrowly passed the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill, which escaped the lower chamber by a scant seven votes despite significant bipartisan opposition.  The U.S. Senate has struggled to pass companion legislation, with several key Democratic senators openly expressing opposition to attempting to pass the energy tax bill.

President Obama has made no secret of his support for the bill, which would be the largest tax increase in American history.  The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has scored the House plan as an $846 billion increase in federal revenue, a burden that will be borne by taxpayers and consumers for decades to come.  Recent analysis by the Institute for Energy Research found the Kerry-Lieberman Senate bill would cost the nation more than 500,000 jobs by 2015 and decrease household income by over $1,000 by 2020.

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Kerpen. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

The pledge is available online at
www.NoClimateTax.com.  AFP does not endorse candidates.  All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a nationwide organization of citizen leaders committed to advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity. AFP believes reducing the size and scope of government is the best way to safeguard individual productivity and prosperity for all Americans. AFP educates and engages citizens in support of restraining state and federal government growth, and returning government to its constitutional limits. AFP has more than one million members, including members in all 50 states, and 30 state chapters and affiliates. Frank Scaturro for Congress
Discuss your Concerns about our Country and meet your Congressional candidate

Republican Congressional candidate Frank Scaturro will be available every Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at campaign headquarters to meet constituents. The campaign is located at 87 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square, NY 11010.

Anyone who would like to share their concerns about the direction our nation is headed, or would like to meet the ‘new Republican voice’ in the race to unseat Carolyn McCarthy, is encouraged to stop by any Friday.

“I have been all over the district in the past year, and will continue to travel around and meet as many people as possible” said Scaturro, “I also want to make sure I am available to Nassau County residents who would like to take more time to talk to me about the problems we face, and the representation they want in Washington.”

“Carolyn McCarthy has failed to remain accountable to our community, and we deserve better. I will always make time for the people who make this county great” concluded Scaturro.
