Frank Scaturro Accepts Debate with Fran Becker
            August 23, 2010
            Frank Scaturro for Congress
League of Women Voters Debate will take place on August 31st at the Hewlett Woodmere Library beginning at 8:15 P.M.

Franklin Square, NY – Frank Scaturro has eagerly accepted the invitation to participate in a debate held under the auspices of the League of Women Voters.

The Scaturro campaign has strived to focus on solutions to the great challenges our nation faces today. It is high time that elections were about which candidate will best represent the people of Nassau County, and not about political bosses or special interests.

Our country faces record debt, rising tax rates, and a healthcare takeover that Carolyn McCarthy has rubber-stamped. We must take back her seat for the people or risk leaving Democrats in control of the House, and our country on its current declining path.

“I look forward to this opportunity to discuss the best approach to reversing the far-left agenda that has been thrust on the American people under the House’s Democratic leadership,” said Frank Scaturro.

“The more open the election process, the better.  The American people are engaged as never before and deserve the opportunity to see and hear their candidates.  That belief has guided my campaign.  It is why I am available to constituents every Friday at our headquarters, and why I have traveled all over the district to meet my neighbors.”

“I look forward to Mr. Becker’s confirmation of his participation in this debate, and thank the League of Women Voters for their commitment to Democracy,” concluded Scaturro.

Frank Scaturro: Israel Needs Support from Washington
                August 31, 2010
                Frank Scaturro for Congress
Israel is our staunchest ally in one of the most sensitive and dangerous regions in the world, a thriving democracy surrounded by oppressive and hostile regimes.  Against this backdrop, the current administration took an unfortunate turn. Too often, President Obama has slighted Israel and given hope instead to the enemies of Israel and the United States.

President Obama began his tenure by reaching out to the two main state sponsors of terrorism in the Middle East which threaten Israel’s survival, Iran and Syria. The administration from day one established diplomatic ties with Syria, a backer of the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah.  The president then sought to engage Iran, a brutal dictatorship whose leadership denies the Holocaust, rejects the very existence of Israel, and seeks destruction of the Jewish state.

In a speech to the United Nations, President Obama referred to the Israeli “occupation,” and in Mr. Obama’s Cairo speech, he compared the plight of the Palestinians to that of the Jews during the Holocaust.  He has supported the goal of a divided Jerusalem, and in so doing turned his back on the Israelis’ claim to their city as the undivided capital of the Jewish state—a claim supported by U.S. law, the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995.

The east Jerusalem housing construction project announced in December was met by condemnation from the administration. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spent 45 minutes on the phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu berating him for settlement construction and dictating the administration’s terms for peace.  Most troubling was Clinton’s demand that Netanyahu make a “substantial confidence-building gesture to the Palestinians,” when every land concession ever given to the Palestinians by Israel has only been met with more terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians.

During a March visit to the White House, the president abruptly walked out of talks with Netanyahu, handed the prime minister a list of 13 demands, and left him to sit alone for over an hour. The episode was humiliating to our guest and his country.

Throughout all this, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy has failed to defend Israel, apparently because that would require her to criticize the Obama administration. She said nothing about Obama and Clinton’s treatment of Netanyahu. She said nothing about the administration’s absurd charge that Israeli settlement construction, in Jewish neighborhoods, is to blame for stalled peace negotiations. It is as if decades of Palestinian violence and refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist have no effect on peace negotiations.

Perhaps even more troubling was the reaction of Rep. McCarthy to the flotilla attempting to break Israel’s Gaza blockade.  Her initial statement demonstrated a lack of understanding of the situation. She expressed sympathy for the provocateurs without acknowledging their blatant disregard of the procedures required for humanitarian aid vessels. The evidence from the beginning made it clear that Israel was simply enforcing a fully legal blockade of Gaza.  Israeli soldiers would not have been forced to draw their weapons had they not been sabotaged.

Her reaction stood out like a sore thorn amongst her peers given the bipartisan show of support for Israel shown by many members of Congress. In addition to prominent Republicans like Eric Cantor, Peter King, and Michele Bachmann, New York House Democrats Anthony Weiner, Gary Ackerman, and Jerrold Nadler spoke out in immediate defense of Israel in response to the onslaught of condemnation it received from the international community.  During the week that followed the flotilla episode, Rep. McCarthy failed to speak out on this pertinent issue.    Only when outcries from her constituents  reached a fever pitch did her office finally issue another statement.

The history of the Middle East makes it clear that the Arab-Israeli conflict is not over a small stretch of land, but over Arab intolerance of a Jewish and Zionist entity in their midst.  Arab media and Muslim clerics in the region repeatedly call for Israel's destruction on a daily basis—both in their television and news media and in their educational curriculum.

Israel cannot be left to fend for itself simply because the Democratic leadership in Congress is unwilling to criticize a president of their party.  If elected to Congress, I would insist that the Palestinians understand that the security of Israel and recognition of the legitimacy of the Jewish state are preconditions to the peace process. I will not defer to a president of either party when I feel he or she is mistaken on such a critical matter.

The people of Nassau County deserve representation that is vigilant in the face of extremism and terrorism, and will stand by their true friend Israel. The president’s desire to improve our relationship with the Muslim world should not lead us down the path of compromising our principles or abandoning our allies. Unfortunately, the administration’s handling of the state of Israel has given rise to palpable fear that our greatest ally in the Middle East is being subverted at a time of unprecedented vulnerability. Israel has made tremendous concessions in an attempt to secure peace, and should not be expected to make more before its neighbors recognize its right to exist.

Israel is not and should not be a partisan issue.  If our representatives in Washington find themselves unable or unwilling to defend Israel’s right to exist and take the actions necessary to protect its citizens, they have ceased to represent and should make way for new leadership.

Frank's Address to the 4th District
                  August 16, 2010
                  Frank Scaturro for Congress

Frank Scaturro's Address to the 4th District of New York from Frank Scaturro on Vimeo.

I am grateful to all of you who have gathered here. It is a great honor to fight with you for the values we all hold dear.
Only a few generations are presented with the kinds of challenges we face today. The governing class in Washington has left our country with a crisis of confidence of a magnitude we have rarely seen. We face this crisis in our economy, in our health care system, and too often in our schools. Jobs are disappearing under the yoke of crushing taxes and wasteful spending, and our families are suffering the consequences. In Nassau County, we face the second highest property taxes in the nation, and because the cost of living here is already so high, the taxes imposed by the federal government are that much more oppressive. Look around you, and you will see our residents voting with their feet—leaving our county, leaving New York State altogether in search of relief. And in the face of staggering unemployment—on a level we haven’t seen in a quarter-century—our government responds by taxing, spending, and regulating even more. Our national debt has surpassed 13 trillion dollars because of the government’s fiscal recklessness. And the higher the debt, the more difficult it is for families to make basic life decisions like buying a home, buying a car, or sending a child to college. We owe it to future generations to restore a belief in the American dream. That will only come about through honesty about the need to reduce spending and courage to make it happen.

Over one hundred years ago, at the midpoint of our country’s history, the man depicted behind you assumed the helm of our government. At the start of a century of great uncertainty, Theodore Roosevelt left behind a nation that was stronger and better respected throughout the world. We the people of Nassau County are proud to claim him as one of our own.
We feel this way no matter what our background—and to be sure, our county would become a much more diverse place than it was in the days of Roosevelt. Wave after wave of new inhabitants came here to live, most from New York City, and in many cases from families that emigrated to this country in search of a better life than they faced in the country of their birth.
My own father came to this country from Italy when he was a boy. He brought with him the immigrant work ethic and the values of selflessness, integrity, and faith. My parents sacrificed for the sake of their children’s future. And this is where my journey began. I did not come from a political family, but I was captivated from a young age by our nation’s history. I quickly learned that we stand on the shoulders of generations who made great sacrifices, and that we should do what we can in our own time to preserve what was secured at such a great price.
My first encounter with Congress came when I did battle as a private citizen with government officials who betrayed the public trust. It was a struggle, but I blew the whistle when I saw that the bureaucrats in charge of the tomb of Ulysses S. Grant were allowing a national treasure to fall into ruin rather than doing the job taxpayers were paying them to do. More recently, while working on the Senate Judiciary Committee, I saw from within the halls of Congress how much opportunity there was to do good, only to have that opportunity squandered. Members of both parties have been guilty of compromising principle for the sake of grabbing power. They were so preoccupied with their partisan games that they forgot who they were supposed to represent.
Our political leaders have abandoned common sense: You do not reduce debt by creating more debt. You do not create jobs by punishing the very people and small businesses that create the jobs. The burden on hardworking families and on our community will not be lifted by increasing that burden, and certainly not by mortgaging the next generation’s future. For the first time in centuries, parents are telling their children that they will enjoy a lower standard of living than they did. For them, there is a growing fear that the American dream is slipping out of their grasp before they even have a chance to live.
Instead of addressing our most pressing problems, our current leadership has focused its attention on legislation that threatens our health care system; a cap and trade bill that imposes an onerous energy tax that hurts lower-income families the most; and an apparently endless spending spree that has done nothing to turn the economy around. I will fight against any “cap and trade” scheme like the one our current representative in Congress voted for. And while many politicians talk about cutting reckless spending, I have a specific plan to make that goal a reality. In the process, we can make our government more transparent so citizens can see where their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent.
I am also committed to vote for a repeal of the recent health care takeover. The existing system, to be sure, was far too expensive for patients, but Congress’ response made matters worse. We need to restore control to doctors and their patients; to give people more choice in their health care; and to curtail the wasteful practices that doctors are using to keep lawyers away. Instead, our representative in Congress voted for a virtual government takeover of our health care system that will diminish the quality of care the most vulnerable patients will receive without even addressing the cost.  The more our suffering economy is consumed by health care, the less can be devoted to both private enterprise and shared public goals like defense, public works, and education.
Let’s think about how we are treating the next generation. Education itself is among the most important duties of government, and children should be exposed to a well rounded curriculum that will best enable them to find the most rewarding vocation in life. Long Island will always include some of the nation’s best public schools, but where public schools are failing to perform, we must as a matter of civil rights provide relief to parents. And while our first great civil rights achievement as a nation was the realization that one person should not be a slave to another, we must do our utmost to ensure that our youth do not become slaves to drugs; that they are not brainwashed and destroyed by a gang culture; and that we crack down on the underworld of illegal immigration and human trafficking.
The failure of our leadership sadly extends beyond our shores.  We need eternal vigilance to effectively combat terrorism and protect American interests abroad.  We all want to work toward a lasting peace, but that will not happen if we empower our enemies and alienate our allies.  We need to be more confident about the exceptional form of government that is democracy. Our freedom thrives because of generations who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We must remain vigilant to the greatest challenge that faces us in the 21st century: terrorism spawned by radical Islamic extremism. In confronting this threat, our policy should avoid a September 10th mindset and recognize first and foremost that we are at war. Acts of terrorism should not be treated like routine criminal matters. Nor can we allow the federal government to shortchange New York in security funding while the city remains a major target of those who wish us harm.
Moreover, whatever differences Americans have on foreign policy, we must never lose sight of the big picture: that America is the greatest defender of liberty the world has ever seen. So I promise you I will never go abroad and apologize for this country. We must reassure our allies and remind our enemies that we will continue to defend the principles of freedom and human dignity that have made this country a better place and the world a better place. We stand with our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We stand with all our veterans. We stand with other democracies in our desire for a freer world. And we stand with Israel, our embattled ally in the Middle East. Israel has already made tremendous concessions, and should not be asked to make more before its neighbors recognize its right to exist. We all stand together against the threat to our allies in the Middle East and Europe that would be posed by a nuclear Iran. And while people of good faith can differ, they should never go so far that they make America’s enemies’ arguments for them.
At this moment, when so many feel we have lost our way, it is time to return to first principles. The purpose of government is to preserve our freedom and foster a stronger community. The power of government should not be used to buy votes or reward political friends. As we have seen with our current leadership, a government that takes that approach only makes it more difficult for the economy to come back and for jobs to be created. We should never allow a fear of change to blind us to this central truth: The best our country has to offer lies in each and every one of you. What made this country great in the past is what will ensure a better future: the hard work, intelligence, character, courage, and faith of our people.  If you set low expectations of people and deny their ability to shape their own future, don’t be surprised if they meet those expectations.
Washington and our governing class are out of control, and they badly need checks and balances. One-party control too often breeds arrogance. In a culture of backroom deals, where one side keeps undermining the other as it jockeys for more and more power, our leaders forget why they are there. They think it’s all about them. But they are supposed to represent you, the people. You should ask for nothing less.
Theodore Roosevelt understood this. He did not view political office as something to hold for its own sake. He did not allow the trappings of Washington to get in the way of those to whom he owed his first duty—the people. To be sure, he was not the favorite of the party bosses. He understood more than any president the importance of being a faithful steward of our natural resources. He had a big heart and an independent mind, and used the talents God gave him to bequeath to the next generation a better world than the one he inherited. One hundred years later, it was he alone whom the people of Nassau County deemed worthy of the honor he was given here at the seat of our county’s government. But what would he think if he were here today? As a new generation of leadership sets a course for the future, we must remind ourselves of the best of our tradition. Too many people have become so accustomed to corruption and cynicism, both at home and in Washington, that they have allowed themselves to forget.
We owe it to the next generation to show that political office is a noble calling; that the public trust is earned by respect rather than fear; and that integrity and decency can still have the highest place in our public life. My promise to you is this: In all that I do, whether you agree with me or not, I will always remember that I represent you—not any hidden agenda or special interest. My loyalty is to you and to the Constitution I will be sworn to uphold. I will never betray my conscience or sell you short for the sake of following the path of least resistance. Now I know politicians promise a lot of things. This is a promise you can trust, because I am already keeping it. It is the reason I continue to run for Congress rather than betray my conscience and my neighbors.
It has not been easy for me to be here, or for many of you to be here.  Don’t be afraid to stand with us. I do not flinch from a challenge. I welcome it. We together should cherish our independence. Remember, this is the home of Theodore Roosevelt. People of our county got into uniform and crossed an ocean to liberate Europe from the scourge of Nazism and fascism. Others crossed another ocean to confront the forces of communism in Korea and Vietnam. On 9/11, our firefighters and police officers went to Ground Zero in the face of a terrorist attack. Surely we can show the immeasurably smaller share of courage it requires to voice our opinions in our own home. Never give in to the cynics who say that our political system is broken beyond repair. This year, you have a real choice to make. Our representative in Congress is failing us. So vote for new representation. Let those who look back on the year 2010 know that this was the year things began to change for the better. And if anyone dare suggest we don’t have it in us to rise to the occasion, tell them that we are the people of Nassau County, and we will never give up the fight until we take our country back. Thank you, and God bless you.

The proposed plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero has triggered a national debate that has brought in everyone from Sarah Palin to President Obama. Unfortunately, the intense spotlight has not cleared up the many questions about the mosque builders, the funding of the project, or the intentions behind it. Neither the President nor a good number of New York Democrats, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, have shown an interest in answering those questions.

Why that location? Are those who are trying to build the mosque near Ground Zero doing it to encourage interfaith dialogue? The words of the president of the Cordoba Initiative that purchased the site, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, suggest otherwise. If they were trying to build a bridge, why resist transparency instead of disclosing the sources of their funding? Questions have even been raised about the initial naming of the mosque as “Cordoba House” before it was retracted in the face of protest (although the Cordoba Initiative still uses that name to refer to the project).

Imam Rauf has spoken out in favor of imposing Sharia law in contexts that apparently include the U.S. and once asserted that “the United States’” policies were an accessory to the crime that happened” on 9/11. That is his right, as is the construction of a place of worship. The location of such construction, however, raises serious questions.

Rep. McCarthy unfortunately has shown no interest in asking any questions. Instead, she stated (as usual, speaking through a spokesperson): “The debate around the proposed Cordoba House has been an emotional one, and now that the measure has been approved to move forward, I hope we can work together to rebuild the area around Ground Zero in a manner that will honor our fallen heroes.”

In reality, the matter is not finished. The decision has been appealed, and additionally, Con Edison must sell off its interest in the property or consent before construction starts. The failure to address the questions raised by the mosque demonstrates the deference we have grown to expect from our representative to Speaker Pelosi and President Obama. Once again, her constituents deserve better.

Taken in context, the mosque would be viewed by our enemies as a monument to conquest at the very site of the most murderous attack ever committed on American soil. It would serve throughout the world as a strategic victory for Al Qaeda and other radical Islamic interests with which we are at war. Whether it is completely accurate or not, they would claim that the building of a mosque in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero, where they destroyed the World Trade Center, shows that they are succeeding and that more attacks will further their goals. Moreover, this would be an affront to those who lost family members at Ground Zero, and who rightfully consider the area a mass gravesite.

The bottom line is that location matters when government considers proposed construction. It is a matter of common sense. Government routinely makes zoning and land use decisions according to the character of the surrounding area. A municipality may determine that buildings cannot exceed a certain height after making a judgment about the surrounding area or that a casino could not be built near a school (or anywhere for that matter). In recent years, there have been challenges to proposals to construct a theme park or a shopping center on or near Civil War battlefields, not because opponents wanted government to ban the underlying projects entirely, but simply because they were not appropriate on what our nation rightfully considers hallowed ground. Ground Zero bears a similar sanctity, and our elected officials should have better protected it when faced with the mosque proposal.

In spite of all the attention and debate, there is still an opportunity for the Cordoba Initiative to do the right thing and move the Community Center to another location out of respect for the 9/11 victims and the nearly 70% of Americans who oppose its construction. I urge them to listen.

Scaturro: McCarthy Scandal Shows Loyalty to Special Interests Not the People

Franklin Square, NY – The Daily News today reported Representative Carolyn McCarthy took campaign donations from lobbyists and in turn “steered $4.3 million to two clients” of the contributing lobbying firm. The firm employed Paul and Mark Magliocchetti, who have been indicted for illegal campaign contributions.

“The people of Nassau County have long wondered why their representative was rarely seen around the district and has been notoriously unresponsive to their concerns”, said Frank Scaturro, “Now their worst fears have been confirmed. Rep. McCarthy is clearly more loyal to special interest money than her own constituents”.

Like McCarthy, Scaturro’s opponent in next week’s Republican primary is a seven term career politician who is beholden to special interests, not the people. He did not begin a campaign until spurred forth by political bosses.

Mr. Scaturro has a record of fighting corruption and abuse. He successfully fought a corrupt government bureaucracy to have Grant’s Tomb restored, and is now running to unseat Mrs. McCarthy despite attempts by party bosses to undermine the process.

Republican Frank Scaturro of Hempstead has been making the rounds as he revs up his campaign against Democratic U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of Garden City.

Most of the Congressional attention on Long Island this year has focused on the 1st CD, where Republican Randy Altschuler is making a serious run against incumbent Democrat Timothy Bishop.

But keep an eye on Scaturro in the 4th CD....

“Scott Brown effectively spoke out for fiscal responsibility and responsible government.  I congratulate Senator-Elect Brown on his victory and commend him for his perseverance and integrity throughout his campaign. Frank Scaturro for Congress
Discuss your Concerns about our Country and meet your Congressional candidate

Republican Congressional candidate Frank Scaturro will be available every Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at campaign headquarters to meet constituents. The campaign is located at 87 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square, NY 11010.

Anyone who would like to share their concerns about the direction our nation is headed, or would like to meet the ‘new Republican voice’ in the race to unseat Carolyn McCarthy, is encouraged to stop by any Friday.

“I have been all over the district in the past year, and will continue to travel around and meet as many people as possible” said Scaturro, “I also want to make sure I am available to Nassau County residents who would like to take more time to talk to me about the problems we face, and the representation they want in Washington.”

“Carolyn McCarthy has failed to remain accountable to our community, and we deserve better. I will always make time for the people who make this county great” concluded Scaturro.

Letter to the Editor: Defeat McCarthy
                                        July 31, 2010
                                        Frank Scaturro for Congress
In a letter to the Garden City News, Mr. Edward Heaney expresses why he's supporting Frank Scaturro at this critical time for our country.

"...I will endorse a candidate to run against Mrs. McCarthy. He must first win in the Republican primary in September. His campaign will soon kick into high gear and I promise that you will learn much about Frank Scaturro that you will like. Please support him with your vote. Elect Frank to our House and once again, as played by Gary Cooper, Mr. Smith will go to Washington.

Frank is not the candidate of the Republican Party bosses. He is his own man, not a party hack. This should make him all the more attractive to you.

My mission is quite simple- defeat McCarthy, elect Frank Scaturro to the House and then on to 2012. At stake is the future of our country. We have made horrendous mistakes, perhaps fatal mistakes, but it may not be too late to rectify them."

                                        Defeat McCarthy

                                        To the Editor;

Time has a way of fleeting, the days, months, years and seasons blending into each other. This past winter dragged on with little hope in sight. If you find summer has its problems, please think back to snow, ice and the long dark days.

Our trustees have done an excellent job dealing with issues which would have baffled ordinary men. There seem to have been few permanent solutions as nothing becomes easier. We deal with problems one after the other and I believe it is not in our nature to quit. We must come together to decide the future of this Village we love so well and, at the same time, focus on state, national and international issues. We are surrounded by those who wish to see us perish.

Our country is in as rotten a shape as I have seen since I was a boy. I am angry because over a period of years we have allowed it to happen. “The only thing necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.” Oh yes, I know. “The American people wave the flag, beat the drums and play the bugles.” Sadly, the term “American people,” no longer rings in my heart.

The famous author who lives in Garden City had this to say through a character in his latest novel: “The American People are Corrupt, Decadent and Afraid.” So, What do you believe?

In November 2011 we will go to the polls to vote in the most important election of our lives. We, the voters in the fourth C.D. have the obligation to defeat a politician who has never represented us and who is absolutely unresponsive. This election is not about party affiliation. If you judge it necessary to defeat the incumbent of the party you support, do so. Vote for the candidate you believe will work to help us to get out of the mess we have created. As always, the ultimate responsibility lies with us.

Ms. McCarthy has thrown in with the Clintons and Obama. Heady stuff. Continuing McCarthy in the House is not to our benefit. At the very least we must force a political balance in Washington. Placing the political power and control in the hands on one party, any political party, is a disaster in the making.

Now is the time to cut the legs out from under Obama by denying him the control and support of the three parts of our government. We must first win in 2011 and then go on to win again in 2012.

Unless Obama resigns or is forced out before his term ends, he could be the presidential candidate in 2012. I believe the Democrats will risk revolution and will not allow Obama to run in 2012. I also believe the deal was cut in 2008, “One term for you, Obama, and then out. It will be Hillary’s turn in 2012.” (Although too horrible to contemplate). There is not a shred of difference between Clinton and Obama.

I will endorse a candidate to run against Mrs. McCarthy. He must first win in the Republican primary in September. His campaign will soon kick into high gear and I promise that you will learn much about Frank Scaturro that you will like. Please support him with your vote.
