Franklin Square, NY – The Daily News today reported Representative Carolyn McCarthy took campaign donations from lobbyists and in turn “steered $4.3 million to two clients” of the contributing lobbying firm. The firm employed Paul and Mark Magliocchetti, who have been indicted for illegal campaign contributions.

“The people of Nassau County have long wondered why their representative was rarely seen around the district and has been notoriously unresponsive to their concerns”, said Frank Scaturro, “Now their worst fears have been confirmed. Rep. McCarthy is clearly more loyal to special interest money than her own constituents”.

How to vote: Voting Machines, Absentee Ballots, and Polling Places

Voting Machines

This year brings a big change with new electronic voting machines. Not to worry! The County Board of Elections is hosting a number of information sessions featuring the new machines. The key thing to remember is to properly fill out the paper portion of the ballot. As long as you completely fill in the bubble next to the candidate of your choice, and only one bubble for each category, processing the ballot through the machine will be easy. If the machine does alert you to a mistake, please take the time to cancel the vote and start over again so you get it right.

Frank Scaturro: Israel Needs Support from Washington

Israel is our staunchest ally in one of the most sensitive and dangerous regions in the world, a thriving democracy surrounded by oppressive and hostile regimes. Against this backdrop, the current administration took an unfortunate turn. Too often, President Obama has slighted Israel and given hope instead to the enemies of Israel and the United States.

President Obama began his tenure by reaching out to the two main state sponsors of terrorism in the Middle East which threaten Israel’s survival, Iran and Syria. The administration from day one established diplomatic ties with Syria, a backer of the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. The president then sought to engage Iran, a brutal dictatorship whose leadership denies the Holocaust, rejects the very existence of Israel, and seeks destruction of the Jewish state.

I am writing to share my enthusiasm for a candidate for Congress who will truly represent the needs of our district in Washington. His name is Frank Scaturro.

Frank is a first-generation Italian-American who has spent nearly all of his 38 years in New Hyde Park. He is an attorney, author, and preservationist who will go to Congress to cut taxes, lower spending, and create jobs. He is a Conservative Republican candidate who previously served as Counsel to the Constitution for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee and was a key aide on the nominations of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Frank most recently served as a visiting law professor at Hofstra University School of Law, where he taught courses on the legislative process and the Constitution.

My husband, Jim and I were both born and raised in Garden City. After leaving to pursue our educations and careers, we returned to Long Island seven years ago to raise our children. While there are so many reasons to love life here, we feel dismayed that our current representative in Congress does not reflect our voice or address our concerns. Taxes continue to rise; small businesses on Long Island seem to be disappearing; and the frightening trend of government takeovers in the private sector and health care have left us saying, “Enough!”

It is time for a change, and Frank Scaturro has the intelligence, integrity and vision that will give us our voice back.

As you may know, my dad, Jack Wydler, was the representative for our district for 18 years. People still stop me to say how special that time was and how much they appreciated having a Congressman who was there for them to represent their needs. I have followed Frank’s campaign for the last year and I see many of the same qualities in him that my father possessed. I have every confidence that Frank will work hard to improve the lives of those of us who live in the 4th district.

Kevin McCarthy (no relation to Carolyn) a Republican Representative from California in charge of recruiting new candidates told CNN that Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4) is now seen as a vulnerable seat.

"McCarthy said over 80 House seats are now in play, noting that is more than twice the number Republicans need to take the majority. Ticking through many of the competitive races across the country, McCarthy predicted even more seats currently leaning Democratic –like Rep David Wu's in Oregon and Rep Carolyn McCarthy's in New York - will begin shifting toward the Republican column."

Scaturro: Ground Zero Mosque raises many questions

Rep. McCarthy and fellow New York Democrats duck for sidelines

The proposed plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero has triggered a national debate that has brought in everyone from Sarah Palin to President Obama. Unfortunately, the intense spotlight has not cleared up the many questions about the mosque builders, the funding of the project, or the intentions behind it. Neither the President nor a good number of New York Democrats, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, have shown an interest in answering those questions.

Why that location? Are those who are trying to build the mosque near Ground Zero doing it to encourage interfaith dialogue? The words of the president of the Cordoba Initiative that purchased the site, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, suggest otherwise. If they were trying to build a bridge, why resist transparency instead of disclosing the sources of their funding? Questions have even been raised about the initial naming of the mosque as “Cordoba House” before it was retracted in the face of protest (although the Cordoba Initiative still uses that name to refer to the project).

I am grateful to all of you who have gathered here. It is a great honor to fight with you for the values we all hold dear.

Only a few generations are presented with the kinds of challenges we face today. The governing class in Washington has left our country with a crisis of confidence of a magnitude we have rarely seen. We face this crisis in our economy, in our health care system, and too often in our schools. Jobs are disappearing under the yoke of crushing taxes and wasteful spending, and our families are suffering the consequences. In Nassau County, we face the second highest property taxes in the nation, and because the cost of living here is already so high, the taxes imposed by the federal government are that much more oppressive. Look around you, and you will see our residents voting with their feet—leaving our county, leaving New York State altogether in search of relief. And in the face of staggering unemployment—on a level we haven’t seen in a quarter-century—our government responds by taxing, spending, and regulating even more. Our national debt has surpassed 13 trillion dollars because of the government’s fiscal recklessness. And the higher the debt, the more difficult it is for families to make basic life decisions like buying a home, buying a car, or sending a child to college. We owe it to future generations to restore a belief in the American dream. That will only come about through honesty about the need to reduce spending and courage to make it happen.

The free market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today applauded New York U.S. House candidate Frank Scaturro (4^th District) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax Pledge.” Scaturro joins more than 600 bipartisan lawmakers and candidates on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“The one thing elected officials should agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP Vice President for Policy Phil Kerpen. “We encourage all of New York’s elected officials and candidates for office to sign the pledge.”

McCarthy should join call for Rangel to Resign

Today, congressional candidate Frank Scaturro (NY-4) called on Representative Carolyn McCarthy to join many of her colleagues in asking that Representative Charles Rangel resign his seat representing New York's 15th Congressional District.

Rangel was charged by the House Ethics Committee with 13 violations, including accepting favors and benefits from donors that may have influenced his official actions, misusing his office, failing to pay taxes on his Dominican villa, improperly accepting rent-stabilized apartments (including one he used as a campaign office), and repeatedly violating House financial disclosure rules.

"This matter has dragged on for nearly two years, and the House Ethics Committee charges show repeated disregard for the law. The entire spectacle has become an embarrassment. We should expect much better from those who are given such an important public trust” said Scaturro.
He continued, “Instead of doing what is right for our country, which is getting our economy back on track and Americans back to work, we are now on the verge of being distracted from the needs of our fellow citizens with a costly public trial.”

“I call on Representative McCarthy to ask Representative Rangel to relinquish his seat. Corrupt politicians should not have the honor of serving this great nation in Congress."

Now is Not the Time to Raise Taxes on Middle Class

Rep. McCarthy should join bi-partisan effort to extend middle class tax cuts.

Franklin Square, NY – At the end of this year, both the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that helped prevent further financial damage after the 9/11 attacks are scheduled to expire. Congress must act soon in order to extend the tax cuts and spare millions of Americans a tax increase in the middle of a recession.

Contrary to Democratic talking points, allowing these tax cuts to expire would hurt middle class American families: the marriage penalty would return; the child tax credit would be reduced by 50%; five different tax brackets would be increased, including the 10% bracket rising to 15%; and unfortunately, there would be even more increases.

Nassau County suffers under the second highest property taxes in the nation, as well as a sky-high New York State income tax. Raising numerous taxes on middle class families is the WRONG move for Nassau County.

President Obama himself promised “no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase.” Thus, he should welcome Democratic support for extending the expiring tax cuts.

So why doesn’t Carolyn McCarthy stand up for her constituents?

By supporting Rep. Nadler’s cost of living adjustment bill, Rep. McCarthy admits that the tax burden in New York is far too high. Yet she will not come out in favor of lower rates and extending middle-class tax cuts. Instead, she would further complicate the tax code with legislation that will favor wealthy Manhattan residents.

“Rep. McCarthy should join sensible congressional Democrats like Sen. Evan Bayh, Rep. Gerry Connolly, and Rep. Harry Mitchell, in working to extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts,” said Frank Scaturro. “I sincerely hope she will help our community by fighting to protect middle-class families from tax hikes.”

Letter to the Editor: Defeat McCarthy

Scaturro on the Ballot

Frank Scaturro delivered more than twice the required Republican signatures to the Nassau County Board of Elections Today.

Mineola, NY—The year of the American people continues. The Scaturro campaign has shattered its goals for petition signatures on both the Republican and Conservative lines by submitting 3,305 Republican, and 363 Conservative signatures. This ensures that Frank Scaturro will appear on both party lines for the September 14th primary.

The people of the 4th district want to send an honest new face to Congress to represent their true interests, not those of Nancy Pelosi. Their hard work and enthusiasm has ensured they will have that choice on September 14th and November 2nd.

Budget Debacle

Two weeks ago, Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced the House will not pass a budget this year. That represented the first time since the modern budget process was created in 1974 that Congress has failed to adopt an annual budget resolution.

In order to get around this failure, and keep the out-of-control spending going, House Democrats voted last week to “deem as passed” a non-existent $1.12 trillion budget. This underhanded move skirts one of Congress’ most basic responsibilities, writing a budget. Some Democrats attempted to employ a similar "deem-and-pass" strategy earlier this year when it seemed they did not have the votes to pass a widely opposed health care bill. Now this procedural gimmick returns as a way to avoid going on record to vote for a budget resolution with more trillion-dollar deficits and job-killing taxes.

A Busy Week at Scaturro Headquarters!

Frank will be listening to and meeting constituents on July 7 from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Starting July 8th and running through July 10th, headquarters will host a petition drive featuring food, petition gathering tips, and prizes.

As we approach the deadline to submit petitions on July 15, Scaturro volunteers will be working hard this week to surpass the campaign's goal for petition signatures. Scaturro for Congress headquarters, located at 87 Franklin Avenue in Franklin Square, will host a multi-day petition drive.

Last week, Carolyn McCarthy wrote a letter addressing the court-martial of three U.S. Navy SEALs who allegedly punched a terrorist.

The lack of knowledge about our troops, or of willingness to defend them, is disturbing.

In the letter, Rep. McCarthy not only fails to defend the SEALs against the overblown charges; she does not seem to know that they had already been cleared of all charges!

Americans today believe you should serve and get out.

Remarks at Grant’s Tomb for President Grant’s 188th Birthday

We gather here to commemorate President Grant’s birthday every year, and this year’s ceremony comes as our 18th president is in the news. It so happens that early last month, there was a proposal in Congress to replace President Grant on the $50 bill with President Reagan. Now I should say at the outset that I believe President Reagan deserves to be featured on currency, but President Grant does not deserve to be dropped from it.

Frank Scaturro continues to outpace his fellow Repubicans in fundraising as he seeks the GOP nod to unseat U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Garden City.)

Scaturro, a Hofstra law professor, has raised $268,148 to date, including his personal loan of $62,000, according to data complied by the Center for Responsive Politics. (At opensecrets.org)

Republican Candidate Frank Scaturro Releases First Quarter Fundraising Totals

NEW HYDE PARK, NY - Today, Republican congressional candidate Frank Scaturro announced his best fundraising quarter to date. Scaturro reported to the Federal Election Commission that his campaign raised approximately $100,000 during the first quarter of this year (January 1 to March 31, 2010), and has more than $183,000 cash-on-hand. “The first quarter has been our most successful yet, and I thank the many people in the 4th Congressional District who have offered their support” said Scaturro.

Statement on the Retirement of Justice Stevens

Scaturro Criticizes the Health Care Bill and its Disregard for the U.S. Constitution

NEW HYDE PARK, NY -- Today, congressional candidate Frank Scaturro (NY-4) spoke out against the health care legislation passed by the House of Representatives last night:

“The health care legislation passed by the House creates a massive, open-ended entitlement at a time when our government has failed to pay the obligations it already has. It will neither reduce our budget deficit nor reduce the cost of health care. With its sizable list of mandates and controls on the insurance market, the measure amounts to a government takeover that threatens to diminish choice and competition for private sector health insurance. For the foreseeable future, the portion of our economy that is spent on health care—an estimated 17%—can be expected to grow, slowing economic growth and diminishing the government’s ability to invest in basic priorities like education, defense, and public works. The legislation also marks one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history, which is the last thing we need as we struggle to encourage job creation amid an unemployment rate just under 10%.

Justice Samuel Alito has been unfairly criticized by several legislators, as well as by media commentators, following his reaction to a surprising rebuke to the Supreme Court delivered during the State of the Union Address. The rebuke, directed at the majority of the Court that issued the recent Citizens United campaign finance decision, was a surprise not only because of the venue in which it was delivered, but also because it mischaracterized that decision as “revers[ing] a century of law.”

Republican Frank Scaturro of Hempstead has been making the rounds as he revs up his campaign against Democratic U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of Garden City.

Most of the Congressional attention on Long Island this year has focused on the 1st CD, where Republican Randy Altschuler is making a serious run against incumbent Democrat Timothy Bishop.

But keep an eye on Scaturro in the 4th CD....

The aggressive spending initiatives of the administration and Congressional Democrats over the past year only delayed an economic recovery. Republicans won a squeaker in Long Island, New York's Nassau County this week. And according to the loser, Democratic County Executive Tom Suozzi, it should serve as a warning to politicians nationwide, especially those in high-tax states.

"People are angry about property taxes, and they held the county executive accountable," said Mr. Suozzi after conceding to Ed Mangano, a little-known local Republican legislator. "You'd better be careful, because you're all at risk."

Frank Scaturro, a young, energetic, across-the-board conservative with the pragmmatic, problem solving style of Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell, is challenging McCarthy in the 4th Congressional District race in 2010. McCarthy’s last rating from the American Conservative Union was an 8. Her lifetime rating is 20. The NRA, not surprisingly, gives her an “F.” Her last rating from the left wing Americans for Democratic Action was a 20. McCarthy was first elected as a moderate former Republican, but has drifted steadily left in 13 years in Congress. In the current Congress she has voted the Democratic Party line more than 98 percent of the time, according to the Washington Post. She voted “no” on the Stupak Amendment to the House version of the Obama-Pelosi healthcare bill, and then voted yes on the final bill. This district is simply not that liberal, and McCarthy could be far more vulnerable than past election results suggest.

Republican John Wydler had held what is now the 4th since it was first carved out in 1962 until his retirement in 1980, when he was succeeded by GOP State Assemblyman Ray McGrath.
